AN upgrade of the heritage-listed Nowra Courthouse will begin early next year.
The proposal has been in the pipeline for some time but NSW Attorney-General Bob Debus this week confirmed the work would go ahead."While there have been some unavoidable delays in the planning of this project, this year's budget has allocated an additional $1.2 million to allow for the start of building early next year, taking the total budget to $6 million," Mr Debus said."The present complex operates at maximum capacity requiring the relocation of a number of tribunals and cases in outlying courts. "It has no facilities for victims of domestic violence, the legal profession or remote witness facilities."The extension will include extensive refurbishment to create a jury court, a new local court, prisoner accommodation and transfer tunnels, and security upgrades.
