Construction has started on a new $5 million retirement village in Nowra which will help fill a shortage of purpose-built retirement accommodation in the area.
Illawarra Retirement Trust's (IRT) first Nowra village will be located on Brereton St, a short distance from Nowra Fair.
It will consist of a low-care residential facility (hostel) and self-care retirement units.
IRT has received approval for 33 hostel units and a total of 44 self-care units.
The village will be built in stages with the first stage including all 33 hostel units and a portion of the self-care units.
Additional self-care units will be planned to meet future demands.
Building works are being undertaken by IRT's own construction team and local contractors interested in providing goods and services for the project have been encouraged to submit expressions of interest.
The village was designed by highly regarded Nowra architect Edmiston Jones.
The self-care units consist of two-bedroom villas with attached garages, and the hostel has been designed in the form of three domestic style houses each with its own kitchen, lounge and dining area.
The low-care residential facility has been designed specifically for people with special needs such as dementia.
Not only is the new village close to shops it will overlook Shoalhaven's proposed Gateway Park area.
IRT plans to transfer a significant portion of its unused land to the council for use in the development of the new park area.
The Trust has provided aged care services in the Shoalhaven for more than 20 years with villages at Culburra, St Georges Basin and Milton.
